It's X-Files meets Lost, and nominally monster of the week. But many of these monsters connect back to the choices of Walter Bishop, who once tore through the barrier between universes to save his son's life. Or kidnap a duplicate of his dead son from an alternate timeline, whatevs. (It was an accident. If by "accident" you mean "Walter chose every action likely to bring to fruition his unacknowledged desires".) Knowledgeable people begged Walter not to open this door between worlds, as the destruction of both universes was a likely side-effect. Not that this stopped Mr (Doctor) Mad Scientist: what's the death of worlds compared to getting his son back?

...consequences are one of my bulletproof narrative themes. Does it show?

There are consequences, of course. Walter's shielded from some of them during the 17 years he spends institutionalized, judged mentally incompetent after a lab accident causes a colleague's death. Trouble comes knocking with Special Agent Olivia Dunham, FBI, who has a stack of questions about a series of bizarre incidents that seem related to Walter's old research, and an order for Walter's release into his son's wardship.

And I haven't even gotten to NINA'S ARM. Or Nina! Or Astrid. Or Olivia Dunham, hypercompetent FBI agent. Or really highlighted an extremely likely consequence Walter skipped over: in Peter's "home" universe, someone kidnapped Walter Bishop's son. Given Walter's choices when grieving a tragic but natural death, one can only imagine Walter's choices when frantically searching for his vanished son.

AND ON TO 2X16.
