I went to Escapade! I am back from Escapade! I have something that is allergies or a cold or the plague!

(It's not the plague. It's probably a cold.)

The con was fun, A+ would go next year, especially if I prearrange a better exercise plan. Note to self: when will you learn to pack a swimsuit if you're going to SoCal? Will it be 2018? It could be! It could be even sooner.

It has been a really stressful month - I moved! I worked at least one extra shift a week. And now my hard work is paying off: I will be in LA at Escapade this weekend. If you're in the LA area and would like to meet up, I have a car. If you'll be at Escapade and would like some face time, comment or PM. I would love to put faces to names and meet new people.

Worldbuilding Exchange Letter

Dear Worldbuilder,

Unbelievably, this is a placeholder! I'm going to clean up the fandoms before assignments go out, I really hope. Okay, make that "before Sunday", worldbuilding author. Sorry about that! If you already have an idea, ignore the new stuff and go wild.

I am having a heck of a time with this prompt because I am one of those "but everything is worldbuilding!" fans. Character is formed by the intersection of person and circumstance, and circumstance is worldbuilding. Plot is constrained and freed by worldbuilding. It's unlikely you will write a thrilling pilot-on-pilot starfighter dogfight in a universe without spaceflight. Sex is definitely informed by worldbuilding. Who you do it with, what acts are acceptable, what is kinky, what is Beyond The Pale, how often you do it, and how you feel about that... it's the intersection of biology and social programming! And social programming is worldbuilding.

I hope this makes clear how excited I will be about what element(s) you choose to focus on in your fic. I want a story that to goes off on Anabaptists in fantasy AUs or materials engineering or how to make a really good space!custard (food availability and regional variation is definitely worldbuilding), whatever gets your crank turning. Geek out, turn it into fic or meta. The social, the political, the economic, the scientific, the mystic, the technical, the philosophical - do it!

To give you some idea of stuff I like, feel free to check out my DW Dear Author tag.

I've asked for fandoms that have gaps in canon that might be fun to address, or because they're gap-fillers and I think there's more that could be done in those gaps. Also, I asked for fanfic or meta for all fandoms, because I really don't see the distinction.

Alliance-Union, Cherryh )

Fringe )

Star Wars, Rogue One and the Thrawn trilogy )

A few generic likes/dislikes:

Stuff I Like: people working together to overcome obstacles, snark and snappy dialogue, banter, darkfic, place as character, postapocalyptic, N Times Characters Did A Thing. I have a bulletproof love of competence, including competence at being villainous, and characters finding connections and trusting each other. Add "in bed" to any of this for great shippy times.

Do Not Wants: PWP, bloodplay, coffeeshop AU, high school/college AU, explicit descriptions of sexual assault, cross-generation (May-December) ships, cheating and/or infidelity.

Shippiness is okay, and background pairings, whether F/F, F/M, M/M, are all excellent options. OT3 is one of my favorite solutions to love triangles.

Above all, have fun! Thank you for writing something that explores one of these fandoms.

Have I Mentioned I Like Worldbuilding In The Last Five Minutes?

So there is a worldbuilding exchange. Someone else already has nominated "Worldbuilding: Azi-Cit Transitions (Alliance-Union)" so I will be there with bells on. This may be the exchange most relevant to my interests since [community profile] crossovering.

Nominations close January 23rd/24th depending on your time zone. Signups close January 31st for most of the continental US.

Dear internet,

Rogue One has eaten my brain. It's flawed and where are all the women and yet I am having a major fannish reaction. Send help. Or fic, that works too.

A Star Wars Fangirl (Who Is Still Waiting For The Reboot Version Of Mara Jade, Kthx.)

P.S. K-2SO is my favorite, by a narrow margin. ALL THE SARCASM, FRIENDS. BRING IT. I reserve the right to change my mind any time, because, well, narrow margin.

P.P.S Once the DVD is released, someone needs to vid Rogue One to Fall Out Boy's "Rat-A-Tat-Tat", I am just putting that out there. No thesis existed for burning cities down at such a rampant rate / No graphics and no f*cking PowerPoint presentation / So they just DIY'd that sh*t and built their own bombs / She's his suicide blond, she's never in gold.

P.P.P.S. I have a 3k draft of Lyra gen fic, with bonus Saw Gerrera. This is going to end in a Clone Wars/Rebels marathon, isn't it, because canon nit-picking is my thing.

Canon Prodding

Readers who have read Cyteen, and maybe Regenesis, some worldbuilding questions.

1.) How does final tape work? Canon says the general plan is that some fraction of azi will get final tape, become CIT, and generally do all the things CITs do. The only time we see this in canon is Ollie. (I was about to mention 40,000 in Gehenna, but the azi get tape for a new Contract, not final tape. That the Contract is pretty much "have some kids, good luck" doesn't get them out of second-class status.) So, does an azi apply for final tape? Is the offer made by a Supervisor? Are they ordered to take it? Is there a transition period?

2.) How does Cyteen's voting system work? Emancipated adults are in a Bureau; everyone votes for representatives within their Bureau; there are nine Bureaus. Why does State get to be a Bureau; and Science? Do you have the option to change Bureaus? And how do professions get assigned? For example, if you're a researcher in a Defense facility, are you Science, or are you Defense? If you're an office manager for an independent journalist, are you Citizens or Information? (It says early on that Citizens is "labor and farming and small business". Define "labor" and "small business" for me.) If you're retired military, working, as, say, civilian law enforcement, are you still Defense, or do you vote in a new bloc? If you're a merchanter, do you get to vote in Trade elections? (And in that case, can you have dual citizenship / voting rights in the Merchanter's Alliance?)

3.) Anyone who wants to assess the Expansionist/Centrist positions in Cyteen versus Regenesis, with attention to any retcons, go wild in comments.

Yuletide Reveals

For Yuletide I got insanely lucky: I received two stories in the main collection and a gift in Madness as well.

The two stories in the main collection are both Velgarth stories, about Tarma and Kethry. All I really wanted in this fandom was Tarma and Kethry being awesome, and I got this twice. I got Tarma and Kethry being awesome in a quieter moment, and Tarma and Kethry on a case.

I'm happy with the narrative voice, and I had fun putting in bits of canon, but the actual story I think sounds like everything else I've ever tried to write. Getting the story to gel was surprisingly tough, and I kept tweaking until pretty much the last moment. One of my 2017 goals has to be to push harder to write more fic, and put more variety in it.

Merry Frelling Christmas

Going to the movies is becoming a family holiday tradition. Last winter there was a mass outing to TFA. This winter we had made plans to see Rogue One, before the news about Carrie Fisher's passing broke. And then we went to Rogue One anyway, and while people's gifsets had hinted at spoilers, I had no idea what I was getting into.

I also watched the Sense8 Christmas special. I like Sense8, but it's kind of an adorable hot mess. (The women's center? Really? That... isn't the spot I'd pick for a hideout.) And also very bad at writing Riley.

Happy holidays to those who celebrate, happy Yuletide to those who fic, and see you all in 2017.

Yuletide Letter

Dear Yuletide writer,

First, thank you! I'll be happy to see new fic for any of these fandoms, about pretty much anything that is not explicitly invoked in my do not wants. These fandoms all speak to something I love. ODAO, character requests should be considered "OR" not "AND".

Stuff I Like: people working together to overcome obstacles, snark and snappy dialogue, banter, darkfic, place as character, postapocalyptic, N Times Characters Did A Thing. Worldbuiling. I have a bulletproof love of competence, including competence at being villainous, and characters finding connections and trusting each other. Add "in bed" to any of this for great shippy times. If crossovers and fusions are your things, bless you, writer. Crossovers and fusions are a joy to me.

Do Not Wants: PWP, bloodplay, coffeeshop AU, high school/college AU, explicit descriptions of sexual assault, cross-generation (May-December) ships, cheating and/or infidelity, violence much more intense than canon-typical levels.

Shippiness is okay, and background pairings, whether F/F, F/M, M/M, are all excellent options. OT3 is one of my favorite solutions to love triangles.

That's it, that's the letter. Everything else is fandom-specific prompting. If you have an idea, go forth, write. If you're looking for ideas, read on.

Movies and TV

Interstellar: leaving aside the science quibbles, I would like this movie much more if Cooper or whatshisname the old scientist guy were genderflipped. It takes away a bit of my irritation with the scene where Murphy dismisses her honors for a lifetime of hard work on space travel as "only because I had your help, dad!" It didn't feel like Team Science, it felt like misattribution of credit. Also, I dislike Spielberg's the Spielberg-like manipulation of my feelings. IT'S SAD I GET IT OKAY. ANNE HATHAWAY SHOULD BE THE PARENT, NOT MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY. EVEN IF MCCONAUGHEY GIVES ME CONTACT FEELS.

Instead I've been watching The Good Wife, which for many years I avoided because of the title. My mistake! It's political maneuvering, with shades of gray, but unlike House of Cards, I'm invested in the characters.

Blithering about characters, up to about S4. )

I kind of want to do Five People Alicia Florrick Didn't Sleep With (But Perhaps Should Have), but I also... don't? Because more sex doesn't actually solve any of Alicia's problems. What might solve some of Alicia's problems is a social structure that lets her have her political husband and her handsome if feckless lawyer boyfriend on the side, but it doesn't work that way, does it.

It would also be a lot of fun if there were a West Wing crossover, because CJ and Diane would slay me.

The Man in the High Castle (2015)

There's now proof that if you say "multiverse" I really will watch absolutely anything.

Never did I think I would say this, but this is a show that would benefit from some characters dropping acid. )

And... I... kind... of... want a Frink-and-Childan noir-ish codependent snippy backbiting forger-and-fence relationship. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in San Francisco.

Frank: You said you sold it for 100,000.
Robert: I did. I did! You got your share.
Frank: *Holds up newspaper* Says in the paper they donated the piece to a museum. Valuation was one hundred *twenty* thousand.
Robert: ...Frank. I... you don't know the value of your work.
Frank: I know you owe me another 12,000 yen.

At some point it comes out that Frank is churning out fakes to fund the resistance, as part of the grand gesture to the Japanese occupation that killed his sister and her kids. Robert's horror at working with an accused Jew (well, Robert would say something less polite). Robert may or may not be slammed against a wall by now. Ahem. Do I trust Frank to do the smart thing, or the self-destructive thing? Ah ha ha did you watch S1.

My fannish energy has been diverted into keeping up at work, which has involved all but literal running between work stations. Instead of making fannish things, I've been sucking down a steady diet of Star Wars fic, Hamilton, and TV, and occasionally reviewing professional and technical basics.

I skipped Sherlock for five years, but this week I broke down and watched "A Study in Pink". There's the occasional clever bit, but wow. Sherlock the TV show exists in an uneasy tension between yearning for Victorian!Sherlock verging on fetish and the awareness the show is set in a modern London. If not quite our London. There's some awkwardness about Teh Gay that... explains a bit about some of the more extreme fan theories. The mystery didn't grab me, and as an origin story, well, I can see what the writers tried to do with Sherlock deducing Watson shot the perp, but by that point I didn't care.

Apparently it gets a little better in other episodes, but then it gets worse, and then there's the holiday special or something. Drugs and Victorian London are involved? Anyway, this isn't high on my to-watch list.

Fannish bestie E. has made the point more than once that Joan sets boundaries and models responsible behavior with her Sherlock, where John and Sherlock enable each other. Now I see it myself.

Desire to cross Sherlock with anything: zilch.

I have also mainlined the first season of Jane the Virgin. It's dancing on the edge of self-aware silliness and just plain silly in a fun brightly colored palette. Some of the romantic plots I could take or leave, and the mystery plot running alongside the Jane plot is Byzantine and so improbable it borders on parody. But I sort of adore Xiomara and Rogelio as the Papagena and Papageno of the show. It's also fun to see the show's dips into seriousness, like the drama around Alba's immigration status.

Jane the Virgin is geographically incompatible with most of my go-to fandoms, but several of those fandoms also have travel options. There's probably a ridiculous Fringe crossover if you hit the comedic element just right. Okay, I just want the look on Olivia's face when Jane tries to explain her life in a nutshell, as related to whatever handwavey case of the week brings Team Fringe into Jane's orbit.

I've also mainlined Steven Universe, which is an adorable kid's short series with occasional narrowly averted destruction of the Earth. Watching SU is like eating potato chips: you say, "oh, one episode is ten minutes, I will watch an ep and then do the thing," and five episodes later the thing is still not done, though the bag of potato chips is definitively finished.

In a tone shift, I salted the SU marathon with the second season of Orange is the New Black.

What should I watch next?

Also, what books are people looking forward to in 2016?

Yuletide and Star Wars

I defaulted on Yuletide. I... don't feel great about that.

But I still received a gift. The Flower of Tisarwat is (Imperial Radch, gen, 1461 words) is Tisarwat in the aftermath of Anaander Mianaai's meddling, with poetry as a coping device. Go, read it!

Because... history has its eyes on you. )

It was always doomed to failure, but I was going to avoid investment in the new Star Wars movie as long as possible. Really. I'm still a little bitter about Star Trek: Into Darkness. A little. Okay, more than a little.

However. If there was a franchise Abrams was born to direct, it's Star Wars. Star Wars has all the things Abrams tried to cram into Star Trek that didn't fit with that franchise. And Olivia Dunham basically is a Jedi Knight.

And then someone crossed the steams. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote cantina music for The Force Awakens.

That's it, there goes my detachment. And also Saturday afternoon.

Plot bunnies, free to good home:

For reasons which were rapidly becoming clear, aliens had kidnapped Philip Broyles. Broyles is an Anaander Mianaai! Fringe/Imperial Radch, crackfic, with a suspicious trace of Jupiter Ascending. If memorial pins are made, Walter's is an enameled white tulip.

Yuletide Letter

Dear Yuletide writer,

We like the same rare fandoms, clearly only good can come of our match-up. And by "good" I may mean interstellar siege warfare, or the terrible things people do when they've lost everything, or ways of making a new home in another world entirely. I love all these fandoms, so don't feel like prompt length has anything to do with desirability. The character requests are the characters I am most excited about getting fic for, and I would suggest, even encourage, additional characters if that's where your story takes you. And if your story includes just some of these characters, that's fine too.

What do I like? N things, place as character, fork in the road AUs, hugs, comfort sex. Misunderstandings and their resolutions. Worldbuilding! Stories that play on the worldbuilding, using some quirk of the major McGuffins or themes for Reasons. Competence, whether it's at scholarship, or diplomacy, or shooting things. Consequences, good or bad. If you're moved to write a crossover, go for it. Anon comments are enabled if you want to ask about a hypothetical crossover, or any other question.

Gen or shippy fic are both up my alley. OT3 is one of my favorite solutions to love triangles. The pan-fandom ship I will go down with is Favorite Characters/Happiness. (The road to Character/Happiness may be fraught. I eat that up with a spoon.) Rape, bloodplay, and infidelity are major turn-offs.

Other do not wants: epistolary fic, coffeeshop / modern day AUs, explicit descriptions of sexual assault, violence that's more intense than canon-typical levels.

Alliance-Union - C. J. Cherryh: Damon Konstantin, Elene Quen, Joshua Talley )

Fall of Ile-Rien - Martha Wells: Tremaine Valiarde )

Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie: Seivarden Vendaai, Sphene, Tisarwat, Zeiat )

But most of all, dear writer, have fun! I don't get to read a lot of fic in any of these fandoms, so I really will be happy if you just write that one story you've wanted to get out, however serious or silly, and haven't gotten around to. Happy yuletide!

P. S. So matching snuck up on me and I made some tweaks on 10/30. HTH, writer.
