It was always doomed to failure, but I was going to avoid investment in the new Star Wars movie as long as possible. Really. I'm still a little bitter about Star Trek: Into Darkness. A little. Okay, more than a little.

However. If there was a franchise Abrams was born to direct, it's Star Wars. Star Wars has all the things Abrams tried to cram into Star Trek that didn't fit with that franchise. And Olivia Dunham basically is a Jedi Knight.

And then someone crossed the steams. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote cantina music for The Force Awakens.

That's it, there goes my detachment. And also Saturday afternoon.

Plot bunnies, free to good home:

For reasons which were rapidly becoming clear, aliens had kidnapped Philip Broyles. Broyles is an Anaander Mianaai! Fringe/Imperial Radch, crackfic, with a suspicious trace of Jupiter Ascending. If memorial pins are made, Walter's is an enameled white tulip.

Steven Universe / Calvin and Hobbes, Calvin goes to the beach (under protest). Calvin, Steven, Connie, Hobbes and Lion have an adventure. Calvin admits the beach might not be so bad.

I will never forgive Abrams for Into Darkness. But I am approaching Star Wars with increasingly hopeful anticipation.


Broyles is an Anaander Mianaai!

Star Trek is not at its best as a kinetically driven action-adventure shoot-'em-up. It wants at least a nod to some kind of deeper thought about social issues. There's a reason my favorite ST movies are Wrath of Khan (aging, and vengeance, and allusions to classical literature!) and The Voyage Home (save the whales! With occasional campy humor!). Star Wars, however, is exactly what Into Darkness was trying to be. I think it might work out.

Okay, try this: "Unknown to everyone, including himself, Philip Broyles is an Anaander Mianaai!" This is clearly the version where someone dropped him on Earth as a tiny baby and left him alone from there. For a while.

Though one could do the darkfic scheming version too, of course. Which... wow, would change all those times you think Nina is the enigmatic schemer. Hmmm! Or maybe B. is all set to annex Earth, and Olivia Dunham changes his mind. She's pretty good at that sort of thing.

I'm still bitter, too. No plans to see the new movie here. I'll wait until it hits the library so I don't have to pay for it.

It's... not bad! Lots to quibble, but also a lot that was very enjoyable, at least for the duration of the film. The Abrams style fits well with Star Wars in its most ep 4-ish moments. But I'm glad someone else will direct ep 8.

It's far from genius, but it was fun. There's at least one thing I am guessing will Not Be Your Thing when you get it from the library.
